Discernment is one of the most important—and often misunderstood—skills in spiritual life. It is the ability to recognize what is truly spiritual versus what is emotional, mental, or situational.
Healthy discernment protects against fear, confusion, and spiritual burnout.
What Discernment Is (and Is Not)
Discernment is:
- Calm
- Clear
- Grounded
- Patient
Discernment is not:
- Fear-driven
- Urgent
- Obsessive
- Based on panic or dread
If an interpretation increases fear or pressure, it likely needs grounding.
Questions That Build Discernment
Ask yourself:
- Does this interpretation bring peace?
- Does it align with compassion and truth?
- Does it encourage grounding or fear?
- Does it allow for emotional support?
True spiritual guidance strengthens clarity and calm.
Angels and Discernment
Many traditions believe angels assist with discernment by:
- Bringing peace
- Softening fear
- Encouraging patience
- Restoring clarity
Angelic guidance does not rush or threaten.
